2023 Recap & Cheers to an exhilarating 2024!

As 2023 winds down, we’re taking a moment with our CBO, Chris Petrovic, to get the lowdown on FunPlus’s journey this year 2023 – it’s been quite a ride! From strategic shifts to game-changing successes, a mix of high scores and tough levels, we’ve powered through with some serious game-changing moves.

Reflecting on 2023…
Q: Can you summarise the key achievements for FunPlus in 2023?
A: While 2023 was another challenging year in the mobile gaming sector specifically, as well as the video game industry more broadly, our company still produced some noteworthy achievements.
First of all, at the beginning of the year 2023, we decided that the focus and direction of the company will expand beyond being a mobile-only gaming company towards becoming a multi-platform gaming company. That expanded direction allowed us to invest in creating foundational elements to support our “beyond mobile” aspirations, with a primary focus on engaging with our players via PC and web. I’m happy to see that in the course of one year, we have achieved impressive results.
Secondly, we continued to invest in the growth of one of our newest games. For example, Stormshot (Play now! Stormshot: Isle of adventure), is truly one of the amazing success stories in the free-to-play gaming world. FunPlus was able to bring a highly successful game to market in a challenging environment, notably post-IDFA and in spite of all the challenges this new reality brings.
Thirdly, as we all know, our market continues to be challenging with the ongoing changes that Apple and Google are making to their ecosystems, but through that experience and our learnings with Stormshot, we remain as committed as ever to finding ways around and past these.
Last but not least, in addition to continuing to invest in games, we also continue to invest in people as we continued to grow our teams in the Publishing and game development areas in Barcelona. We also welcomed Alex Amancio (Insider Info: FunPlus welcomes gaming industry veteran as SVP and Head of World Building) to the organization. Alex will be leading the charge on many of our AA/AAA cross-platform and transmedia initiatives from our newest office location in Lisbon.
Q: How did the company evolve over the past year in response to market trends and consumer behavior?
A: As mentioned above, during 2023 we took many learnings and have applied them to our current game pipeline and we hope that newer projects such as Sea of Conquest (Play now! Download) will pave the way for our next generation game franchises.
Also in response to changing market dynamics, we tasked Felipe Mata (FunPlus VP of Product) with leading a new hybrid casual game studio in Barcelona in support of our ongoing efforts to diversify our business beyond a single genre and audience profile.
Q: In one word, can you describe how 2023 was for FunPlus?
A: Rollercoaster!

Q: Are there any upcoming trends that you believe will shape our strategies in 2024?
A: I continue to be a believer in the promise of delivering cross-platform gameplay experiences that will broaden the total addressable market, and provide opportunities for building new and different relationships with our player communities. We’re making great strides in this direction.
Q: How is the company planning to innovate in the next year?
A: We will continue to invest in bringing new games to market. And of course, we will continue to leverage the power of enabling technologies such as AI to continually provide time and cost improvements to our content creation and product development processes.
Q: As we are heading into 2024, can you share any details, hints, or teasers about the new gaming experiences and content releases we’re working on? (our players and fans worldwide want to know!)
A: As much as I would like to share everything that we are working on currently, you’ll have to stay tuned for future updates! 🙂
Q: And the last question! If we ask you to define the upcoming 2024 for FunPlus in 1 word, which one would it be?
A: Exhilarating!
